A 14-year-old boy was shot in Providence while riding in a car driven by his mother.
Police said Sokphorn Khoy was driving her son, Benjan Tharoth, and a 6-year-old daughter home from a birthday party at about 9 p.m. Sunday.
After turning at an intersection, they heard booms and saw sparks. Police say someone fired several shots, one of which went through the trunk and into the back seat, where it grazed the boy's shoulder.
"I heard five bullets - bang, bang, bang. I knew it was gun shots," said neighbor David Em.
"I heard some pops, six of them. Pop, pop, pop. I'm pretty sure it wasn't fireworks as July Fourth," said neighbor Matthew DeFlorimonte.
The boy's mother took her son to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where he was treated for what police said was a minor injury. Khoy and the girl were not hit.
Anyone with information should call police.
