3-alarm fire damages Westerly apartments

The building houses 16 apartments in Westerly.

About two dozen people were evacuated from an apartment building in Westerly when a fire broke out early Monday morning.

Firefighters were called to the building on High Street at about midnight. Crews from Pawcatuck and Ashaway were called to help fight the fire.

Two people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The fire started in the back of the building. The cause was not immediately known.

Fire officials said there were 16 apartments in the building. Several businesses are located at the bottom floor.

The Rhode Island Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting nine of the families.
