A solemn ceremony now in its 30th year the annual Aquidneck Island police parade honors officers who lost their lives during the previous year, like Providence Sgt. Maxwell Dorley.
It is a bittersweet occasion for the late Sgt. Dorley's wife, who has since moved, to be back in Rhode Island to see her late husband honored.
In 2012, a total of 120 officers lost their lives nationwide all of them honored by this outpouring of support.
There were many police departments that were represented at the annual event on Sunday, including officers from the Watertown Police Department where Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured. These officers were on the front line of the manhunt that shut down the city of Boston and left communities at a standstill.
The parade honors all members of the police brotherhood both past and present. These brothers in blue are grateful for those who survive, remember those who didn't, and honor the sacrifice that has brought them together on this day.
