Award for Rhode Island environmental chief

A coalition of more than 60 groups and people promoting environmental protection in Rhode Island has honored the head of the state environmental agency for her role in shaping state and national policy.

The Environment Council of Rhode Island has presented the John H. Chafee Conservation Leadership Award to the Department of Environmental Management Director Janet Coit.

The prize is given annually to those who work to improve the health of the Rhode Island environment.

Coit said she was "humbled and inspired and very moved" by the recognition.

Coit previously worked as counsel to the U.S. Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works. From 2001 to 2011, Coit worked at The Nature Conservancy, where she led the Rhode Island Chapter.

The award ceremony occurred on Thursday.
