Representatives of the Azerbaijan government met Tuesday with Rhode Island lawmakers in an effort to lobby against a resolution that would blame the country for a massacre 21 years ago.
A Senate resolution, SR 960, which is sponsored by state Sen. Maryellen Goodwin, urges that those in Azerbaijan who are responsible for perpetrating the Armenian massacres in Sumgait, Baku, Kirovabad, among others be brought to justice.
The resolution was introduced last Thursday, and was scheduled to be heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
The country is an important ally of the U.S. It's located between Iran and Russia and the first Muslim republic with a democracy.
A representative of the Azerbaijan government declined to speak with NBC 10 until he could contact the country's president.
