State officials say strong surf is expected along the Rhode Island shoreline because of Hurricane Arthur and they are urging beachgoers to take caution.
The state Department of Environmental Management said Thursday forecasters expect Arthur to bring dangerous rip currents and high surf across area beaches beginning late Friday and on Saturday, even though the storm is expected to remain well off the New England coast.
The DEM said to expect heavy rain on Friday and Friday evening, with 20 to 30 mph wind gusts Friday night through early Saturday. The strongest gusts are expected along the southern coast.
Beaches will put swimming restrictions in place based on the weather conditions.
Officials say those watching the surf from rocks along the shoreline can also be in danger.
