Fall River police released a surveillance picture of a man wanted in connection with the theft a turtle from the public library.

Police said the man hid in the Fall River Public Library until it closed Saturday. After the building closed, he's seen on security camera stealing the turtle, named Franklin, from a terrarium in the children's room.

Franklin has been with the library for 13 years. Library officials say children come by every day to play with him.

"It not only affects the library itself but the children who come here. He really belonged to the children of this library and this community, so he really harms them," said David Mello of the Fall River Public Library.

Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan said in a Facebook post that it is "shameful" that someone would steal the turtle.

The thief is described as a white or possibly Hispanic man with dark hair in a ponytail. He was wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

Fall River police asked anyone with information about the theft or the man to call them at 508-676-8511.
