Rhode Island would no longer run its own health insurance marketplace under legislation slated to be heard by the House Finance Committee.
State Rep. Patricia Morgan's bill directs the governor to transfer operations of HealthSource RI to the federal government no later than year's end. The marketplaces are part of the federal health care overhaul. Only some states, including Rhode Island, run their own.
HealthSource Director Christine Ferguson is also expected to give a budget update to the panel. She said this week she has withdrawn a request for $4.6 million from the state for the coming fiscal year. That request surprised lawmakers because the governor's proposed budget included all federal funds.
Ferguson has said abandoning HealthSource would be a mistake and that investing in the marketplace will yield returns.
