Bomb scare at mosque prompts evacuations
NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. —
Residents in North Smithfield were forced out of their homes on Thursday night after a suspicious package was left outside a mosque.
A suspicious package was reported at about 8 p.m. outside the Masjid-Al-Islam mosque. Police asked residents in nearby neighborhoods to leave their homes.
Police determined the package only contained clothes, but called in the bomb squad to detonate it out of an abundance of caution.
NBC 10 spoke to members of the mosque who said the incident won't have a lasting effect and their traditional Friday prayer service will continue as scheduled.
Two years ago someone vandalized a sign at the mosque. After that incident, police stepped up security around the area.
Police wouldn't comment whether they'll be making any arrests after Thursday night's scare.
