Cranston's Marissa Castelli and her figure skating partner, Simon Shnapir, are competing this week at the World Championships in Japan.
The pair skated their short program Wednesday, but finished in a disappointing 11th place with a score of 60.60.
They still have the free skate Thursday to improve their standing.
The pair will have to finish inside the top 10 in order for the United States to qualify two teams for the 2015 worlds.
Castelli and Shnapir finished ninth in pairs at the Olympics in February, but they won bronze medals as part of the team figure skating event.
They are two-time U.S. champions.
