Due to a rapid decline in enrollment and increased financial deficits, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy in Central Falls, operated by the Diocese of Providence, will close at the end of the school year.
News of the closure was shared with faculty, staff and parents by letter on Tuesday. An informational meeting for parents will be held Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the school, 909 Lonsdale Avenue.
The diocese says every effort will be made to place students at other area Catholic schools including St. Theresa, St. Cecelia and Woodlawn Catholic Regional School all located in Pawtucket.
Teachers and staff will be provided priority hiring status at other Catholic schools in the state they said.
The Diocese said a steady decline in enrollment from a high of 244 in 2007 to 101 in 2013 has placed an unsustainable financial burden on the school, which opened this year with 50 less students.
Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Academy opened in 1995 and served boys and girls from Pre-K through Grade 8.
