Council says school department made $3 million mistake
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. —
On Tuesday night the New Bedford City Council held a news conference demanding "real, concrete, absolute answers," from the local School Department over the school budget.
The council is questioning why the salaries of 55 school department employees, including at least one New Bedford school principal, were not included in this year's school budget.
City Council President Jane Gonsalves said, "We're going to tell the school department that we're not going to fund their deficit until we see substantive changes in the way they handle their finances, first of all, and also they need to know that they're going to give us back the money that we're going to give them this year to cover the deficit."
And at $3 million, that school budget deficit is no drop in the bucket.
