City Council moves to protect pregnant women

Providence City Hall

The Providence City Council will consider legislation to protect pregnant women from workplace discrimination.

The ordinance requires that employers provide pregnant workers with reasonable accommodations to ensure their health and the health of their children.

Similar to legislation recently adopted in nine other states, the ordinance requires employers to offer pregnant workers additional break time, lighter duty, and private space for nursing.

The ordinance will be introduced at the City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday.
