Coast Guard rescues 2 from burning sailboat

Rescuers with the U.S. Coast Guard pulled two people to safety off the coast of Narragansett after their boat caught fire.

The Coast Guard said Friday it got a distress call from the 60-foot M/V Windermere at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday saying there was a fire in its engine room and that the vessel's fire-fighting system had been activated.

Coast Guard personnel were dispatched by boat and by helicopter. Two people were rescued about two miles southwest of Point Judith and taken back to the Coast Guard station there. There were no injuries.

The fire was extinguished. No pollution was reported. Salvage efforts were continuing Friday morning.
