Search for missing Conn. boater called off

The search for a missing Connecticut boater who was believed to have gone overboard on Saturday has been called off. At 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Coast Guard was alerted of a running boat with no one on board in the area of Fishers Island. The boat was towed in by the Coast Guard Saturday evening. The family believes the boater, Daniel Strelczuk, 62, of Thompson, Conn, was exiting the mouth of Thames River to return to his marina in Noank when he went overboard.{} His sailboat was brought to a marina down the road from Mystic Seaport. Coast Guard planes, boats and helicopters searched for Strelczuk overnight and into Sunday afternoon but called off the search around 2:45 p.m. Sunday.

It said the search extended beyond the time anyone could survive. Officials say rescue crews searched for more than 19 hours, covering more than 740 square miles.
