Cumberland American falls to Texas in LLWS opener

Pearland's Layne Roblyer, right, and teammate Matthew Adams, center, score on a single by Presley Smith off Cumberland pitcher Nick Croteau during the first inning at the Little League World Series.

The Cumberland American Little League team lost its Little League World Series opener to Texas on Friday night 6-4.

With the loss, Cumberland American plays Tennessee at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Trailing 6-1, Cumberland American rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth and had an opportunity to tie the game. But the team's rally fell short.

Michael Groover, who drove in two runs for Texas, made a great defensive play at third base in the fifth inning to stop a Cumberland American rally.

"There were a couple of balls that were hit. I mean, the third baseman for their team made two fantastic stabs. That ball gets by him in the bottom of the fifth and that's going to be a double," said Cumberland American manager Dave Belisle. "The other team played very well defensively in clutch situations.

Mason Matos hit a solo home run and Nick Croteau, C.J. Davock and Trey Thibeault each had two hits for Cumberland American.
