Dartmouth man sentenced in fatal drunken driving crash
A Dartmouth man was sentenced to 15 to 18 years in prison in a drunken driving crash that killed a man, the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday.
Prosecutors said Patrick Coelho, 38, pleaded guilty Monday to a list of charges, including vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an injury resulting in death, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence. It was Coelho's fourth DUI conviction.
Coelho was accused of striking and killing 51-year-old Michael Powers of Fairhaven on Aug. 1, 2011. Powers was driving a motorcycle on Hawthorn Street in Dartmouth.
Witnesses said the saw Coelho driving recklessly and at a high rate of speed before the crash.
Police said Coelho was drunk and that bottles of alcohol were found in his car.
