Doctor pleads not guilty to social host charges
A Barrington doctor pleaded not guilty Wednesday to violating the state's social host law for allegedly hosting a drinking party for teenagers at his home.
Bruce Becker, a professor at Brown University's medical school, appeared in Providence District Court on a misdemeanor charge of procuring alcohol for a minor.
Police said they found beer, vodka and champagne after breaking up the July 30 party. Police said Becker told the teens to run when officers approached.
Becker told police he purchased soft drinks for his son's 18th birthday party but didn't know alcohol was present. Police said a table was set up for playing beer pong, a drinking game.
Becker refused NBC 10's request for an interview.
The crime carries with it a maximum penalty of a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.
Becker was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 23.
