Dog bites students outside middle school

What started as a normal walk to school Monday turned terrifying for a group of kindergarten students in Providence.

Providence Animal Control said a brown pit bull attacked the youngsters as they walked near the Roger Williams Middle School grounds at about 7:30 a.m.

Animal control said two or three students were taken to a hospital. A Providence schools representative said one boy who attends Young and Woods elementary was injured and that he would be back to school in a few days.

Providence authorities said they need the public's help to figure out who owns the dog. There were no tags on it.

"It's really imperative that we can track those people down to see if the dog is inoculated against rabies," said Dave Holden of Providence Animal Control.

The brown pit bull is being held on 10-day quarantine. If no owner comes forward, the dog will likely be put down.
