Driver charged in connection with fatal crash

Daniel Gautreau faces drunken driving charges in connection with the fatal crash that killed his passenger.

A man was charged Monday in connection with a crash in North Providence that killed one of his passengers and injured another.

Daniel Gautreau, 21, of Providence, was arraigned in Kent County District Court on charges of drunken driving and reckless driving.

Police said Gautreau was drunk when he lost control of his car on Mineral Spring Avenue at about 1 a.m. and struck a telephone pole. The car was split in two.

One of Gautreau's passengers, 21-year-old Dominic Guziejka, of Pawtucket, was killed in the crash.

His mother told NBC 10 that she thought the three young men in the car had left a party.

Gautreau was released on $10,000 surety bail last week, and the judge on Monday kept the same bail in place.

He's scheduled to be in court again in August.

Gautreau had been charged with vandalism last year. He's on probation for a year on that charge.
