The Atlantic 10 conference will be looking for a temporary home for its basketball tournament, and the Dunkin' Donuts Center could be interested in making a bid.
The A-10 tournament will be played at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 2015 and 2016. But the Atlantic Coast Conference will hold its tournament at the Barclays Center in 2017 and 2018, forcing the A-10 to find another place to play those two years.
The A-10 returns to Brooklyn in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
Providence officials said they think the Dunkin' Donuts Center would be the perfect spot because the Friars' regular season would be over and the city is willing and able to host the teams and their fans.
"We've expressed an interest with the University of Rhode Island. Once the bid process comes out, we'd be interested," Dunkin' Donuts Center General Manager Larry Lepore told NBC 10.
URI Athletic Director Thorr Bjorn declined to comment.
The A-10 commissioner's office said that it has already received several inquiries from a number of possible locations and that the process is expected to take a couple months.
The University of Rhode Island Rams play in the A-10, and the conference sent six teams to the NCAA tournament this year.
