Elementary school locked down for about an hour

A New Bedford elementary school was locked down Monday for about an hour as police looked for a gunman reported to be in the area.

School district officials said students at the Sgt. William Carney Academy on Elm Street were placed on lockdown at about 2:15 p.m.

The scare ended just before 3:30 p.m., when police finished searching the area.

Police said there was no shooting at the elementary school itself.
