Elorza announcing bid for Providence mayor
Former Providence Housing Court Judge Jorge Elorza is formally announcing his candidacy for mayor.
Elorza is set to make the announcement Monday morning in front of his childhood home in the city's West End neighborhood.
The Democrat says he's running to ensure the capital is a place where the middle class can thrive. He says he will fight for vibrant neighborhoods, better schools and good jobs for all Providence residents.
City Council President Michael Solomon and former Water Supply Board Chairman Brett Smiley are also running on the Democratic side. Psychiatrist Daniel Harrop is in the race as a Republican.
Mayor Angel Taveras is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.
