Ex-state senator sentenced in embezzlement case
A former Rhode Island state senator was sentenced Wednesday to 20 years in prison on embezzlement and conspiracy charges.
Patrick McDonald, 49, will serve 4 1/2 years with the remainder suspended with probation for stealing about $163,000 from clients during real estate closings.
A judge also ordered McDonald to pay full restitution to the three victims in the case and said that he must undergo alcohol counseling. McDonald is currently on home confinement and was ordered to report to the Adult Correctional Institutions on June 1.
McDonald was found guilty in January that he stole money from clients he was representing and used the funds to pay for his law office, house expenses, and dinners and hotel stays for himself and his mistress, employee and co-conspirator Kimberly Gostomski.
McDonald represented South Kingstown and Narragansett from 1996 through 2002.
