Fatal fire in Providence
A man has died in a fire that broke out early Saturday morning in a house on Waverly Street in Providence.
Deputy Assistant Fire Chief Daniel Crowley confirmed that members of the fire department found the man inside the burning vacant house shortly after arriving on scene; they pulled him out but he had already succumbed to injuries. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The man, whose name is not being released at this time, appeared to have been a squatter in the vacant residence at 188 1/2 Waverly Street. According to Crowley, who spoke with neighbors, the home had been known to have housed squatters in the past.
Crowley told NBC 10 that even though the residence was a vacant one it is searched the same as if it were an occupied one, which is how they were able to find the victim so quickly.
According to Crowley they have no reason to suspect that the man died from anything other than injuries sustained from the fire at this time, although he also added that the official cause of death is not yet known.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is still under investigation at this time.
