Providence shooting 1st homicide of 2014

The 24- year- old victim of a fatal shooting in Providence on Friday night is now the city's first murder victim of 2014.

The victim has been identified as Nelson Sanchez, 24, of Providence. According to police the victim was shot while sitting it in the passenger seat of a car at the intersection of Atwells Avenue and Putnam Street.

Major David Lapatin of the Providence Police Department told NBC 10 that Sanchez was driven from the scene of the shooting to the Providence Police Station and dropped off around 8:50pm; he was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he died just after 9 p.m.

Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as Serwah Wogbeh, 23, and according to police Wogbeh was driving the vehicle when another car pulled up alongside it and opened fire fatally wounding the passenger Sanchez.

According to Major Lapatin the investigation is ongoing at this time and police are currently investigating any possible connection between this shooting and the shooting on March Street that happened earlier on Friday. That shooting injured 16-year-old Michael Rodriguez as he walked by the neighborhood recreation center.
