Federal funding to expand job training for laid-off workers

Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse have announced $3.85 million dollars in grant funding coming to Rhode Island, to assist laid-off workers train for available jobs.

Rhode Island is one of 32 states sharing in $150 million from the U.S. Department of Labor.

The funds can be used for job counseling, apprenticeships and job placement programs that connect workers, including the long-term unemployed, with jobs.

Rhode Island may use the money to build on initiatives already in place, including partnerships with General Dynamics' Electric Boat.{}
