Fire leaves 2 hospitalized, 14 forced to evacuate

Garden Street, Pawtucket

Fourteen people are without a home Friday and two people are in the hospital with minor injuries, after a fire in Pawtucket.

The fire broke out at about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at 22 Garden Street.{}

Fire engulfed the house quickly. The fire chief said the 14 people living there were evacuated and won't be able to move back into the home anytime soon.

Neighbors had to be evacuated too, as the homes are extremely close together. At one point the fire spread to a home next door.

Residents watched in disbelief as smoke billowed from the three-family home. "I told her get out of the house don't stay there get out before anything happens," said Constancie Debarros.

Fire started in the back and went up quickly, engulfing the entire structure.

"When we arrived on scene it was heavily involved all three floors, you can't see it now but three porches were involved in the rear," said Pawtucket Fire Chief William Sisson.

Next door neighbors had to be evacuated too. "I smelled it first and then I saw this big flash," said neighbor Shawn Andrews.

Andrews and her husband live next door. They're one of dozens of families who were forced out their homes as the flames began jumping houses.

"You could see the embers going toward my house, so he was right you had to get out of there. But thank god everybody is safe," Kevin Andrews told NBC 10.

Even the pets were pulled out safely.

The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The fire marshal will be back on Friday morning to continue the investigation
