Firefighters rescue dog from icy Pawtuxet River
COVENTRY, R.I. —
Two Coventry firefighters rescued a dog Friday that was stranded in the icy Pawtuxet River.
Firefighters said they got a call about a German shepherd in trouble at about 9:30 a.m. from a resident of Pilgrim Avenue.
Firefighters Joseph Hartman and Steven Mann, dressed in survival suits, pulled the dog to safety on a rescue sled. The rescue was captured on home video.
The 4-year-old dog, named Dallas, had fallen through the ice and was struggling to get out of the water.
Mann said the dog didn't have much time.
"The dog definitely looked like it was going down because one of the chiefs got there before us and he said the dog had already gone under twice," Mann said.
Dallas was checked out and reunited with his family in West Warwick.
"He's like a brother to us," said one of the family's daughters.
Besides needing an IV, Dallas was OK.
