Floating accommodations in Providence gaining popularity

A suite in Providence offers a queen size bed, a comfortable sitting area and a little porch.

But the view from the bed is right at water level, because the accommodations are floating.

"Most people are really amazed. It's like camping almost with a really nice hotel atmosphere," said Ed Macisaac of Sleep Aboard.

You can see a half dozen of the units from the Point Street Bridge. They've been tied up at the Fox Point Marina all season.

They are in a convenient location and close to Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design and the downtown area. There's also two waterfront bars a short walk down the dock.

However these units are not permanent residences. You don't have to do the laundry or the dishes, but there is cable TV and a small kitchen.

Macisaac said the units are available by night, for two nights and weekly. He said starting in the winter, the company will be doing monthly rentals.

"Things are good, booked weekends. Things are going really well," he said.

The company also has a presence in other cities up and down the East Coast, and is looking into other places where it can set up these floating hotel rooms.
