A former Exeter-West Greenwich youth soccer coach accused of child sex abuse was sentenced Thursday to serve six years in prison.
Steven Packer, 36, of Exeter, pleaded no contest to one count of second-degree child molestation in Washington County Superior Court.
Prosecutors said Packer made inappropriate sexual contact with a 12-year-old girl in November 2011.
Before being taken into custody, Packer read a prepared statement.
"Today brings to a close one of the worst experiences of my life. There are people here that feeling justice is being served. I feel justice is being dictated by revenge. I accept responsibility for my actions," Packer said.
Relatives of the girl said they are relieved Packer is off the streets.
"In a situation like this, justice can't really be served but at least now other people will be safe," the girl's mother told NBC 10.
She said the girl is doing well.
