Former councilwoman charged in break-in

A former Johnston town councilwoman is accused of breaking into a neighbor's house.

Police said Melanie K. Turner was arrested Thursday night and charged with breaking and entering, a felony. She was released on personal recognizance.

According to the Providence Journal, $1,800 was reported missing from a neighbor's house on Aug. 2. A police investigation led to Turner's arrest.

Police said some of the money was recovered.

Turner, 51, is scheduled for arraignment Oct. 9 in Kent County District Court. She was elected in 2008, but lost in a primary two years later.
