      Former lawmaker denied new trial

A former Rhode Island state lawmaker will not get a new trial.

Leo Medina was convicted earlier this month of one count of unlawful appropriation of funds. He was found not guilty of two other counts.

Prosecutors said Medina pocketed $28,000 in life insurance following the 2007 death of a friend's daughter.

A judge on Tuesday denied Medina's motion for a new trial.

Sentencing was set for Aug. 5. The maximum penalty is 20 years in prison.

Medina served one term representing Providence. The Democrat lost his re-election bid in 2012.
