Fung defends having Carcieri on exploratory committee

Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, who's a likely candidate for governor next year, is defending having former Gov. Don Carcieri on his exploratory committee.

"The governor's also done some good things the time he was there. He won two elections statewide, as well as Governor Almond," Fung said during a Friday taping of "10 News Conference."

Fung, who still sits on an advisory commission for state pension reform, said while he supports the reforms engineered by General Treasurer Gina Raimondo, and signed on to by Gov. Lincoln Chafee, he's not taking a position on the on-going mediation of the pension reform law passed by the General Assembly.

"Right now, I'm not part of the discussions. I'm sitting on the sidelines. But I have a vested interest as a city and taxpayer too," Fung said.

Fung said he's been meeting with political supporters both in and out of state and expects to make an official announcement on whether he's going to run for governor in a couple of months.
