Rhode Island's top public education official delivered an upbeat assessment of the work going on in schools around the state.

Education Commissioner Deborah Gist addressed a joint session of the Senate and the House Thursday evening at the State House.

Gist said schools are increasingly embracing innovative classroom techniques to boost student performance and prepare them for their future careers.

Gist says her goals include a greater incorporation of technology in the classroom and that she'd like to see every district in the state offer dual language immersion programs for students as young as kindergarteners by 2020.

On Friday, Gist is set to release the state's latest graduation rates and the results from last fall's student assessment tests.
