Donna Perry says her mom, Helen Jankowskis, was a super lady.
"I had a great relationship with her every day," she said.
Jankowskis was diagnosed with lung cancer 12 years ago and died seven years ago. She was 78.
"I watched what she went through so I know I had to do something to help the cause," Perry said.
Perry is chairing the Free to Breathe 5K run-walk, a fundraiser for the National Lung Cancer partnership.
"These funds make a difference because we're making unbelievable strides in research in lung cancer. Research is extremely important. I've met people recently who are living past eight years, nine years and more than that with lung cancer," she said.
Some of those survivors will be taking part in the event, scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Daggett Farm in Slater Park in Pawtucket.
The 5K is promoting hope, awareness and change.
"It's imperative we keep fighting this disease," Perry said.
