Health department recommends closure of 5 beaches
State health officials have recommended the closure to swimming of five beaches in Rhode Island because of high bacteria counts in the water.
Affected beaches are Atlantic Beach Club Beach in Middletown; Easton's Beach in Newport; Peabody's Beach in Middletown; Third Beach in Middletown and Warren Town Beach.
Officials will continue to monitor the water quality and recommend the beaches reopen to swimmers when bacteria levels fall to within acceptable limits.
The health department conducts water quality checks all summer long to ensure safe conditions.
