Hit -and-run suspect arrested
LINCOLN, R.I. —
A suspect in hit-and-run crashes in three cities was taken into custody following a foot chase in Warwick Friday evening.
Rhode Island State Police told NBC 10 it all started when the suspect hit a car on Route 10 on Reservoir Avenue in Cranston.
State Police say Jose Espata, 25 of East Greenwich fled the scene in the stolen SUV he was driving.
Providence Police responded to a call from state police saying the same vehicle had earlier sideswiped a car on Broadway.
A short time later, investigators say the vehicle was in another crash on Post Road at Sand Pond in Warwick.
It was after the third crash that police said the suspect was spotted on I-95 in Warwick, ditching the SUV near some construction equipment.
State police said the man ran off, across a several lanes of traffic and into the woods.
State and Warwick police found him in the woods near the parking lot at the nearby CCRI campus.
After being taken to the Lincoln State Police barracks, he was transported to the hospital. State Police say he was complaining of pain from a crash.
