I-Team: Man who never served sentence avoids prison

A Florida man forced to return to Rhode Island to face arson charges following an I-Team investigation will not have to serve his prison sentence.

Carlton Winsor was convicted of arson in 1988 and sentenced to serve two years in prison.

But the I-Team uncovered a mistake in the court system. Winsor was never ordered to go to prison to serve his sentence.

Following the I-Team story, the state attorney general's office ordered Winsor to return to Rhode Island.

Over the objections of the attorney general, Judge Melanie Thunberg approved a motion made by Winsor for sentence reduction. He was given a five-year suspended sentence.

Winsor, formerly of Wickford and now living in Tallahassee, Fla., is free.
