Independent launches campaign in 1st District
A 27-year-old independent said Wednesday that he's running for Congress in Rhode Island's 1st District.
Jonathan Maciel is an information technology engineer at Marsh and McLennan Companies.
He said he plans to focus on the needs of working Americans and how to rebuild the economy.
"Congressional representatives have lost sight of the fact that they were elected to represent their people's best interest. Congress is filled with former lawyers, business executives, and career politicians. They care for their own special interests and represent the groups that promise them their next big payday," Maciel said in a statement.
Maciel is a graduate of Lyndon State College in Vermont.
He would face incumbent Democrat David Cicilline.
