Rescued harp seal released back to sea
CHARLESTOWN, R.I. —
Mystic Aquarium released a rescued harp seal in Rhode Island Wednesday.
The 1-year-old seal was released into the Charlestown Beachway State Beach.
The seal was rescued in March in South Kingstown. He was thin, dehydrated and had a puncture wound on a flipper. He has been treated with antibiotics and Mystic says he has recovered well.
Harp seals typically travel from Canada to New England at winter in pursuit of fish and return to colder waters in the spring.
Mystic Aquarium's animal rescue program supports animals in need and educates the public about the marine environment.
The public is encouraged to call the aquarium if they encounter a marine mammal or sea turtle in Connecticut, Rhode Island or Fishers Island, N.Y.
