Longtime RI fur business will remain open under new owners

The signs read "Going Out of Business", but William H. Harris Furs on Bald Hill Road in Warwick will remain open.

Store Manager Val Piasecki said the store's owner is 82 years old and he's done with the business and retiring. So the company is liquidating all of its merchandise and setting up a transition with new ownership.

"(The signs) create a lot of energy and a lot of excitement. It creates a lot of traffic in the store," Piasecki said. "We don't get all of our customers in every season so it's an opportunity for them to come in, see our merchandise and perhaps trade something in."

Piasecki said he admits it's a little confusing when signs read "Going Out of Business", when the store is not actually closing.

In fact, the manager says the building won't ever go dark, and the name will remain.

"The Harris brand has been alive in Rhode Island since 1908. The new ownership sees the value in that and will continue the service tradition that Harris has had for decades," he said.

Piasecki said only the Rhode Island location is being sold off. Other locations, in other states, will remain under the same ownership.
