Conn. man dies after getting trapped under car

Investigators look at a car that fell on a man on West Allenton Road on Thursday, May 29, 2014.

A Connecticut man died from his injuries after police said he jacked up his car to fix his muffler and the car fell on top of him.

Police said the man pulled over onto a dirt road turnaround lot at the intersection of West Allenton Road and Route 4 in North Kingstown at about 9 a.m. Police said he was trying to fix the muffler when the car rolled forward and pinned him underneath.

Two police officers tried unsuccessfully to lift the two-door BMW convertible.

"It ended up that they had to use the airbags to raise the car high enough. It was quick. They decided to take him to Rhode Island Hospital as a trauma and they did CPR all the way up there," said Chief Fenwick Gardiner of the North Kingstown Fire Department.

Police said the man was in his 50s. His name was not immediately released.
