Man pleads not guilty in cold case killing

Daniel Serrano

A homeless man who Providence police said admitted to killing a man 24 years ago pleaded not guilty in court Wednesday.

Daniel Serrano was arraigned in Superior Court on a murder indictment. He was ordered held without bail.

Serrano walked into the Providence police station last year and allegedly confessed to killing Michael Holliday by mistake in February 1990. Holliday's body was found in Somerset Street apartment house, and the case went unsolved.

Police said Serrano knew things only the killer would know and that Serrano said he intended to kill someone else.

Serrano, 65, tried to plead guilty at his District Court arraignment last year.

A pretrial conference was scheduled for June 19.
