Providence officer who shot man placed on leave
A nine-year veteran of the Providence Police Department was placed on paid administrative leave after shooting and injuring a man while responding to a domestic disturbance.
Police said Ryan Moroney shot 23-year-old Dari Garcia at a home in the city's Silver Lake section on Monday night. Garcia suffered an injury that was described as non-life-threatening and was being treated at Rhode Island Hospital.
Providence police Maj. David Lapatin told NBC 10 that the incident began when the officer responded to a domestic disturbance call on Clarence Street.
"At some point during that contact, officer Moroney had to use his department issued firearm," Lapatin said.
Lapatin would not elaborate on the circumstances leading up to the shooting, but explained when an officer can fire his weapon.
"When he feels his life or another person's life is in danger," Lapatin said.
Several neighbors told NBC 10 that a baby was involved.
One neighbor said she heard a man and woman fighting over the baby before police arrived. When officers arrived at the scene, she said she heard three shots.
State police are investigating the incident under routine procedure for all officer-involved shootings. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
