A man wanted in California for a parole violation in a murder and who opened fire on Warwick police officers was arraigned on Thursday.
Kenneth Cunningham, 39, was charged with felony assault, possession of a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence being a fugitive from justice and discharging a firearm in the commission of a crime of violence. A Kent County District Court judge set bail at $500,000 with surety.
According to Rhode Island Attorney General's office spokeswoman Amy Kempe, Cunningham was held without bail on violations for outstanding warrants from old felony cases in Rhode Island.
It was not immediately known if Cunningham was going to be extradited to California for the parole violation charges.
Cunningham is next scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 28.
On Monday, authorities say a Warwick officer ran the plates of a suspicious pickup truck an discovered Cunningham was the owner and he was wanted in California.
A police chase ensued. Officials said Cunningham later abandoned the truck and fled on foot before opening fire at police, who shot him at least three times.
Three officers involved in the shooting were placed on leave pending investigations.
