Sentencing postponed in Pawtucket murder case
A sentencing hearing was postponed Tuesday in the case of a Pawtucket man who admitted killing his girlfriend.
After two trials and two overturned verdicts, Juan Diaz pleaded guilty to second-degree murder last week in the June 2008 killing of Mayra Cruz, with whom he was in a relationship.
After Diaz was found guilty in 2010, he appealed and the state Supreme Court sent it back to Superior Court because of concerns with the jury instructions.
Diaz found guilty again in a second trial in August. But the judge in that case invalidated the verdict saying at least one juror had access to information about the case from the Internet, before deliberations.
Cruz was found shot to death in Diaz's apartment on Reservoir Avenue in Pawtucket. Diaz was arrested in Albany, N.Y.
A status hearing was scheduled for Friday.
