Mass. bill would target underage marijuana smokers

A bill before the Massachusetts Legislature, if passed, would restrict driving privileges of anyone under 21 who is caught with an ounce or less of marijuana.

The legislation calls for the arrest and suspension of the person's driver's license for 90 days. The measure also would change state law to include drug rehabilitation.

The Cape Cod Times quoted backers of the bill as saying the measure makes smoking marijuana as serious an offense as drinking alcohol for anyone under 21.

The bill is currently before the Massachusetts Joint Committee on Mental Health and Substance Abuse.
