The Providence City Council approved Mayor Angel Taveras' $678 million budget Monday night.

According to the Providence Journal, the budget was approved by a 13-to-2 vote.

The budget does not increase residential and real estate property taxes. But it does increase overall spending by $8 million which will be covered by higher tangible tax revenues and state aid.

The budget also includes a 4 percent pay raise for city employees, $200,000 for the state library system and money to hire 60 new police officers.
