Mediation continues in RI pension case
Closed-door mediation continues in the lawsuit over Rhode Island's 2011 pension law.
Lawyers for both sides of the case met for a status conference Monday morning at the Kent County Courthouse. The next conference is scheduled for Friday morning.
State lawmakers are closely monitoring the progress of the mediation as any settlement in the lawsuit could have big implications for state finances and the state's public retirement system.
The 2011 law raised retirement ages and suspended pension increases to stabilize the retirement system and save billions of dollars in pension costs in future decades.
Public-sector unions and retirees argued the changes were unfair and sued to block the law. The lawsuit has been the subject of closed-door mediation since 2012.
Any settlement in the case would require legislative approval.
